Research at Microchip Biosystems Lab. focuses on developing integrated microfluidic Lab-on-a-Chip platforms that enable precise control, manipulation, and real-time analysis of biological systems at the microscale. By combining fluidic engineering with sensing and stimulation strategies, we aim to achieve high-throughput and high-accuracy biological experiments.
These platform technologies are applied to a wide range of applications, including Blood analysis systems for point-of-care diagnostics, Wearable liquid metal–based sensors, Organ-on-a-Chip models (brain, retina, and blood–brain barrier), and microalgae-based Biorefinery platforms. Through this approach, we bridge fundamental microfluidic engineering with translational biomedical and environmental applications.

Microfluidic Bioanalysis Platforms
✓ Immunomagnetic isolation and separation of target cells (e.g., NK cells, CTCs, plasma cells)
✓ On-chip biomolecular sensing using optical and aptamer-based methods
✓ High-throughput microfluidic processing of microliter-scale samples
Liquid metal-based Wearable Sensors
✓ Liquid metal electrodes for stretchable strain and pressure sensing
✓ Wearable sensor arrays for AI-based motion tracking
✓ Multi-channel sensing for 2D pressure mapping and imaging
✓ Non-invasive intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring
Organ-on-a-Chip (Microphysiological Systems)
✓ Brain-on-a-Chip: In vitro model for myelination, neural stem cell differentiation, neural signal circuits
✓ In vitro compartmentalized axon regeneration model
✓ Blood barrier models: Blood-brain-barrier, blood-retina-barrier
Microalgae Biorefinery and Bioanalysis Platforms
✓ Microfluidic cultivation systems for controlled light, flow, and nutrient environments
✓ On-chip metabolite analysis and productivity optimization
✓ Sensing platforms for real-time monitoring of biomass and biochemical production
